Alexander Shepherd, MD, PhD, received his medical degree in 1969 from St. Andrews University and a PhD in clinical pharmacology in 1978.
He completed his internal medicine residency training at the University of Dundee and a post-doctoral fellowship for the Medical Research Council of the UK.
He has been on faculty for over 45 years and is now a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio. He coordinates and teaches a clinical pharmacology elective to final-year medical students, teaching more than 200 students each year.
Shepherd has served as the chairman of the Bexar County Hospital District Pharmacy Committee for 30 years and was a member of the National Medical Advisory Panel to the Pharmacy Benefits Management group of the Veterans Administration for almost 20 years. He has served as president of the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and chairman and then executive director of the American Boards of Clinical Pharmacology.
He is the director of the hypertension service at the Medical Arts and Research Center and consulting physician for the Men’s and Women’s Comprehensive Health Programs and the Executive Health Program.
