Human research studies are considered to have a billing risk when clinical services are performed for a research study AND are entered into a patient billing system, such as Epic. A study has limited billing risk if clinical services are provided in a research environment without being entered into a billing system.
Under the direction of HOP 7.7.1, during the Institutional review process the CTO will review billing plans for studies with clinical services, regardless of payor for the services. For studies which are deemed to have a billing risk, members of the research team will be required to complete training prior to the Institutional clearance of their research.
