    First lady Jill Biden toured Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio and praised its efforts in addressing disparities in cancer rates among Latinos. The visit came Feb. 23, the same day as the opening of the biennial Advancing the Science of Cancer in Latinos conference, hosted by Mays Cancer Center and UT Health San Antonio’s Institute for Health Promotion Research, taking place at the Westin Riverwalk downtown.

    Team discovers novel drug target for Alzheimer’s and related dementias

    Researchers from UT Health San Antonio today reported the discovery of a novel mechanism by which pathological forms of tau protein cause neurons to die. Alzheimer’s disease and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) are among more than 20 disorders that include tau protein pathology.

    Small fraction of eligible Texas clinicians prescribing lifesaving medications for opioid use disorder

    Despite scientific evidence that the medication buprenorphine/naloxone (or Suboxone) effectively treats opioid use disorder (OUD), only one-sixth of Texas clinicians surveyed in 2019 and early 2020 said they were prescribing the lifesaving medication, according to a study from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio) published May 12 in JAMA Network Open.

  • Helped develop the world's first stent (Palmaz Stent), used to treat blood vessel blockages

  • Discovered how to increase the types of pancreatic cells that secrete insulin with potential to cure Type 1 diabetes

  • Invented the EZ-IO to rapidly infuse fluids into the bone marrow cavities of patients in shock

  • Discovered a link between finasteride and prevention of prostate cancer in men

  • One of two universities nationwide with a Geriatric Research Education & Clinical Center, Claude D. Pepper, and a Nathan Shock Center
